Brighton & Hove City Council’s LGBT Workers Forum is presenting a free event tonight to try and build bridges between faith communities and the city's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Swords into Ploughshares: Building Bridges between the LGBT and Faith Communities

The debate about faith and sexual orientation in the public arena is highly polarised. The two 'interest groups' of 'believers' in various world faiths on the one hand and 'LGBT activists' on the other are depicted as completely distinct and irreconcilably opposed to one another.

The reality is not so: there are many LGB & T people in every faith community, and there are many people of faith in the LGB & T communities.

However, with notable exceptions, these people are often effectively silenced by their fear of rejection, hostility, verbal or physical attack, or even death. In addition, many people who are not LGB&T/not adherents of religion, also feel a profound sense of dis-ease about the way the debate in this area is conducted.

This event seeks to go beyond polarised positions: our aim is to avoid posturing, point-scoring and easy rhetoric and instead to seek together that place of the enlightened imagination where bridges can be built among and within us.

The emphasis will be on speaking our truth and being willing to listen deeply to others’ point of view, even when we disagree – so that we may find common ground, and build upon it.

The debate will be chaired by Razia Aziz of the Equality Academy and guest speakers including Rabbi Elizabeth Takvah Sarah (Brighton & Hove Progressive Synagogue), Joanna Rowland Stuart (Regard), Petra Davis (Albert Kennedy Trust) and Caroline Lucas MP.  There are further guest speakers from within LGBT and faith communities to be confirmed.
