Just 190 out of 754 MEPs, including the President of the European Parliament have signed the 'Be Bothered' pledge in support of LGBT rights.
MEPs including Martin Schulz MEP, president of the European Parliament, met at a two day, mid term, re-launch event to show support for LGBT rights, organised by IGLA-Europe and the LGBT Intergroup of the European Parliament.
Martin Schulz said:
“As the President of the European Parliament, you can count on me to join the fight for the goals of equality laid out in the 'Be Bothered' Pledge.”
The 'Be Bothered' Pledge is a 10 point manifesto launched by IGLA-Europe and the LGBT Intergroup of the European Parliament, in 2009
The LGBT Intergroup at the European Parliament has 127 members from 22 Member States and 5 political groups.
Co-presidents of the LGBT Intergroup, Ulrike Lunacek and Michael Cashman MEPs, said:
“We are pleased so many colleagues turned up, and of course that our new president added his important support. LGBT rights are gathering ever more allies from across the political spectrum, and the next two and a half years will be crucial to achieve much-needed progress in Europe.”
The pledge has been signed by all 13 British Labour MEPs, 8 out of 12 Lib Dems, both Green Party MEPs and 1 out of 2 SNP MEPs. Only one Tory out of 27 signed it and none of the UKIP, BNP, DUP or former UKIP members signed.
Daniel Hannan, European MEP for SE England who lives in Kemptown has yet to sign the pledge.
Keith Taylor, Green MEP said:
"I am shocked that such few MEPs have signed the pledged. I support equality for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans & intersex people in Europe. Encourage your MEP to sign the pledge."
