Councillors give cautious welcome to Sussex Police plans for Hove

Andrew Wealls and Graham Cox, Conservative Councillors for Central Hove and Westbourne, have welcomed assurances from Sussex Police on the future of policing in Hove and Portslade.

Local residents had raised concerns over the level of uniform policing in the town if the Police Station in Holland Road closed.

Sussex Police have now given assurances that the police station will not close until new patrol bases are found for uniform officers.

Plans to locate officers in an improved base within Hove Park and at a new location in Portslade offer the opportunity to increase the visible presence of officers across the whole of Hove and Portslade.

Cllr Graham Cox, said:
“As the former Police Superintendent at Hove I do have a sentimental attachment to the Holland Road Police Station and will be very sorry to see it closed. However, I welcome the assurance that Councillor Wealls and I have received that this will not happen until new bases for neighbourhood officers in Hove Park and Portslade, as well as a shared front office in the Town Hall, are all up and running. I am also pleased that response officers will use these new bases whilst allocated to emergency calls in Hove.”

Cllr Andrew Wealls, added:
“We are also very interested in the future of the Holland Road site. This is probably the most viable location for a much needed new primary school for Hove. We hope the City Council negotiate quickly and in good faith with the aim of securing this site for local children.”
