The first solar panels have been fitted to council homes in Brighton & Hove.

This comes despite government plans to reduce the amount of money it pays for power generated under the Feed In Tariff (FIT) in a move that will limit the council’s ambitious plans to install solar panels on council buildings and 1,600 council homes.

Council Leader Bill Randall said:
“This is the first of many solar panels that we hope to see fitted to council homes across Brighton & Hove. Solar power will help us support people on lower incomes by reducing their energy costs and keeping them low as well as helping them live healthier lives. Furthermore it will cut the city’s carbon footprint and create jobs in the city.”

Commenting on the plans of the Government to halve the FIT rate, Cllr Randall said:
“This short-sighted proposal could also be a killer blow for the growing UK solar energy industry – not least in Brighton. Local firms installing solar panels had been looking to expand and take on staff but because of the government’s proposals they now expect to cut jobs.”
