Generous Brighton residents have helped the city reach the top 50 in Oxfam’s list of the most charitable places in the UK.

In the last eight years, Brighton residents donated a total of £362,782 on Oxfam Unwrapped charity gifts, helping pay for clean drinking water, food for less-fortunate families worldwide, training teachers and educating children.

Further to these results, a Yougov survey found that 51% of people in the south of England consider Christmas as a time to think of those less fortunate than themselves.

Olivia Morgan, Deputy Shop Manager of the North Street Oxfam shop, said:
“To know that Brighton is one of the most generous cities in the whole of the UK is a wonderful early Christmas gift and I’m extremely proud that we [have made] Oxfam’s poll.  I’m not surprised, given the generosity of people I’ve seen here over the years from businesses and individuals involved in supporting charities, whether as part of their local community effort, or as global citizens. But at a time of economic hardship, it is even more humbling to know how committed we are as a city, to helping others less fortunate than ourselves.”

In total, the top fifty most generous places spent a combined total of £22million on Oxfam Unwrapped charity gifts, which the purchaser receives as an online pass enabling them to learn about the difference their gift has made, including the purchase of a goat, farmyards, books and tools.
