Around 1,200 people responded to consultation carried out at the end of last year on how to improve the area around Brighton Station.

A high percentage (78.7%) said they came to the station on foot, despite the poor quality of pedestrian facilities and 73.7% said they supported re-routing private vehicles away from the southern station entrance.

Many people commented that the current environment in Terminus Road felt unpleasant and unsafe.

A small majority (42.5%) asked for buses to be concentrated outside the southern station entrance, with 30.2% preferring buses both there and in Queens Road; 35.8% wanted to see taxis moved to the north of the station, while 30.5% felt taxis should occupy space at the front and back of the station and 22.9% thought they should stay where they are.

Councillor Ian Davey, cabinet member for transport and the public realm, will consider the responses at the next environment, transport and sustainability cabinet on January 24.

He said:
“We know from what people tell us that Brighton Station does not work well as a fitting welcome to the city, as a public space or as a transport interchange.

“There are a large number of people coming to and leaving the station on foot and we are looking to make it easier and more pleasant for them, as well as reducing congestion which will not only improve access but reduce air pollution.

“It’s been extremely encouraging to have over a thousand people respond to the latest consultation. Their contribution will be enormously useful in helping us draw up designs to improve the station environment for the benefit of those who live, work and visit in the city.”

Southern Rail is also currently investigating an 800 space cycle parking facility as part of the improvements.

If agreed at the meeting, draft design options will be drawn up and exhibited in the spring. Public views will be taken into account in the selection of a preferred design to be displayed at a further consultation event in the summer.

Work is expected to start on site in 2013 and will complement improvements being carried out by Southern Rail inside the station.

The council is investigating funding to pay for improvements that are taken forward. The scheme is currently being financed through the Local Transport Plan budget.
