Lillian Ladele, the registrar who was disciplined after refusing to conduct civil partnership ceremonies on religious grounds, has been refused the right to appeal in the Supreme Court.

Orginally Ladele was disciplined by Islington Borough Council for refusing to conduct civil partnerships. She then claimed that she'd been subject to discrimination on religious grounds and an employment tribunal found in her favour. However, this ruling was overturned by the Employment Appeal Tribunal in December 2008.

Ladele told the Daily Telegraph that her rights had been "trampled" by gay couples. She also stated that she was considering taking her case to the European Court of Human Rights.
