Feelingbroody.com is an online donor and parent connection service which aims to make having a baby easier, quicker and friendlier for single women, gay or lesbian couples and infertile couples. According to Seyi Joseph, who set up the site, it avoids the problems of fertility clinics where people are faced with either the extensive waiting lists of the NHS or the expensive fees of private clinics
Joseph was inspired to set up the service after her own experience of having a child through donor insemination. She paid up to £1200 per insemination, found the fertility clinic experience impersonal and, she says, witnessed the way the fertility industry passed judgement on whether some prospective parents were suitable based on their age, race, sexual orientation or marital status.
Seyi explains:
"Nobody should be denied the chance of having a child due to lack of money or discrimination about their sexuality or lifestyle choices. And whilst people are becoming more tolerant, there is still some stigma attached to approaching a stranger for sperm which makes it difficult to ask for advice or find information.
"Feeling Broody is different from other services because we care beyond the subscription fees. It is important to me not only to help subscribers become parents but also that the process is a pleasant and easy one.
"Feeling Broody provides reliable information resources about self insemination, it also sells high quality and affordable home insemination supplies. And, perhaps most importantly, it offers non-judgemental support from others going through the same experience."
Women register with the site by completing a questionnaire about what they are looking for in a donor or co-parent, from ethnicity, religion, sibling numbers and education to height, hair colour, right-handedness and more, including medical details. Donors are also asked questions about themselves, who they are willing to donate to, how they wish to donate and whether or not they want contact with any children conceived.
This information forms the profiles posted on the site. Registered users can search for a suitable donor or recipient, contribute articles, join a discussion in the forum and use the information section and online store.
Registration for both donors and prospective parents is free. A variety of paid subscriptions is then available if a member wants to contact another member. For £55 users can request the contact details of up to 10 members per month for six months, and for £100 they have access to unlimited contact details, longer profiles and suggested matches for a year.
Members can also wait to see whether any of the donor or recipient profiles matches their requirements and then 'pay as they go' at £8 per contact detail and £5 per longer profile.
