The UK Foundation for AIDS Research is a new charity to help those living with HIV.

Chair Mark Watson explained:
"We are about to launch a new HIV research charity in the UK. The UK Foundation for AIDS Research will be a member led charity, which will raise funds to support research into improving the health and quality of life of those living with HIV, especially as people age.

"Despite the advances in HIV treatments - and the excellence of NHS care - people with HIV often face many health challenges and a poorer quality of life. Research is continuing into new drug treatments, possible vaccines and potential cures. Comparatively little research however is currently focused on how to improve the lives of those living with HIV and already taking existing therapies.

"Our research will therefore be guided by people living with HIV. Whilst the foundation’s grants will be made available only for robust science-based research, people living with HIV will take the lead in deciding the areas of investigation, bringing their experience, concerns and objectives to bear.

"UKfAR will not duplicate the work of existing research programmes, or the organisations or agencies behind them. Instead it will augment and complement that vital research, helping HIV-positive people determine what additional interventions might work for them. It will also help fund areas of research that have previously been neglected or which require seed funding.

"We are also conducting an online survey in order to determine the research priorities of people living with HIV."
