Labour has announced that they will introduce a ban on wild animals being used in travelling circuses.

In recent years the Government has banned hare coursing, fur farming and the testing of cosmetics, alcohol and tobacco on animals. Labour also introduced the Animal Welfare Act which was the first major overhaul of animal welfare laws in a century. The party is continuing to fight to end the illegal trade in ivory and protect the Polar Bear, Bluefin Tuna and Seals.

Local Labour Cllr Bob Carden, animal rights activist and member of Labour’s Animal Welfare Society, which is currently campaigning against the reintroduction of fox hunting and against battery hens, said:
“This decision is another mark that a civilised society should treat animals with respect. But the Tories would put all this at risk with the cruel irony that David Cameron and their Animal Welfare spokesperson both want to bring back the cruel spectacle of fox hunting.”

“This has been an issue that people have been campaigning extraordinarily hard for and I am pleased this effort has paid off.   We all remember the shocking television clips of animals being treated badly in circuses and I agree with many others, including the RSCPA that using Wild Animals in circuses is wrong.“

Backing the decision to pursue a ban, Claire Robinson of the RSPCA said:
We're extremely delighted to see that the government has decided to finally move forward with proposals to ban the use of animals in circuses and that the Animal Welfare Minister agrees it's no longer acceptable.”
