Roger Helmer

LGBT Labour has condemned comments made by East Midlands Tory MEP Roger Helmer, who wrote on social networking site Twitter: "Why is it OK for a surgeon to perform a sex-change operation, but not OK for a psychiatrist to try to "turn" a consenting homosexual?"

A spokesman for LGBT Labour commented:
"Roger Helmer has a history of making illiberal remarks on a range of issues, however his comments today are ignorant, offensive and degrading. We call on David Cameron to condemn Helmer's remarks and initiate disciplinary action against him.

"His comments confuse issues of gender and sexual identity, in a provocative manner unbefitting an elected representative."
