LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) History Month today backed the online petition for an apology for the conviction of gay mathematician Alan Turing.

Turing cracked the Nazis’ Enigma code and is considered by many to have shortened the war. He pioneered artificial intelligence and is regarded as the father of computing.

Co-chair Tony Fenwick said:
"Alan Turing saved the lives of millions of people. He is long overdue an apology for the homophobic conviction which led to his suicide.

"The petition ends in January – shortly before the start of LGBT History Month. What a great opportunity to issue an apology and launch a new national hero!"
