Happy Lesbian Mother's Day from Stonewall

Stonewall is celebrating what it calls a "historic" year for lesbian mums.

A spokesman for Stonewall said:
"It’s been a historic 12 months for lesbian mums. With groundbreaking changes in law (the Human Embryology and Fertilisation Act) as a result of Stonewall lobbying and Stonewall’s plain English guide for lesbians on how to get pregnant, life for future lesbian mummies is now easier and fairer than ever before.

"The first significant change makes it easier to be a lesbian mum came into effect recently. It means that the non-birth mother will automatically be named as the joint parent on their child’s birth certificate if they’re civilly partnered, or conceived their child through a licensed fertility clinic. They’ll no longer have to adopt their child, which was the case before this groundbreaking law-change.

"The second change ensures that lesbian couples can approach fertility clinics with confidence. The law now protects prospective lesbian parents on this because ‘the need for a father’ requirement has been re-phrased to ‘the need for supportive parenting.’ This means the fear of discrimination from fertility clinics needn’t hold women back if they want to become a lesbian mum."
