Currently on national tour and about to hit Brighton on the October 10 (at the Concord 2), The Indigo Girls have released this all new double album on their own label, no less. In the 20 years since the Indigo Girls launched their first album they have continued entertaining us with their uplifting, effortless harmonies and the honest, passionately involved lyrics with a nice dark streak shooting through them.
It’s the I Girls as we like them, rough, ready, challenging and sweet beyond measure, but older too. They’ve grown up with us.
These songs – recorded in a whirlwind three week session- go from Rays
‘Sugar Tongue’ an almost R&B approach to the IGirls harmonic style to
‘Digging for your Dreams’ a fevered meditation on colonialism which brings out some experimentation with the highest notes yet from Saliers.
Ray and Saliers don’t just talk the talk on this album, they walk the walk too and do it in their usual uncompromising way. Poseidon and the Bitter Bug is the work of artists at the top of their game, invigorated to be doing what they love best; writing and performing music. It’s less showy than their last over produced album and brings more of the evident work they put into their songs to the fore. This feels more true to their live style too.
There’s two CD’s in this box, one side with the full band the other has the same songs but acoustic with a bonus song. It’s a neat but curious mix, and changes the songs in profound ways, allows us to hear the ‘girls in a room with some mics’ and its also great fun too.
These girls are critic proof!
