Ian Ross, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Worthing West, has obtained figures from a Freedom of Information Request which show that Worthing Borough Council spent £20k in the last four years on corporate hospitality, such as evening receptions and dinners for councillors.

The Mayor’s office has a separate budget. In the four months from April - July 2009 the Mayor's office hospitality bill came to  £1570.85 – a 21% increase.

Ross said:
“I was very disappointed to discover how much Worthing Borough Council has spent on corporate hospitality for councillors.  At a time when families and businesses are reining in their spending, Worthing Borough Council clearly doesn’t see the need to cut back splashing the cash on councillors' receptions and dinners.  Elected representatives are supposedly elected to serve their communities and many do work extremely hard.  However, I strongly feel it is wrong that local council tax payers’ money is being spent in this way.  When we hear about councils having to cut back spending on frontline public services, this revelation will anger many people in Worthing.”
