Actress Michelle Collins turned on the Christmas lights in St James Street and George Street Kemp Town on Friday night.
The event was organised by the St James's Area Action Group and paid for by local traders and shop keepers through donations.
Labour candidate for Kemp Town and Peacehaven and chair of the Action Group helped co-ordinate the installation of the lights which were a first for the area.
Simon said:
"To be honest we had a lot of last minute technical problems with the electricity supply and mounting of lights, so we were very pleased to get the lights on on-time. Having lights has been raised a number of times over the last fifteen years so it says a lot about the community coming together that we achieved it this year. We still have some money to raise so any businesses or resident who could donate should get in touch with me soon so we can put them on the local newsletter that goes to 2000 households."
