The Tories, who have removed the sustainable transport section from the City wide Sustainable Community Strategy for the City, have been accused by Labour of trying to "
wreck" the chances for a sustainable future for Brighton and Hove.
The Labour Councillors condemned the attempt by the Tories to block the work of the community representatives at the Local Strategic Partnership, which is chaired by Roger French.
Leader of the Labour Group Cllr Gill Mitchell said:
"Transport must be at the heart of any sustainable and environmental programme for this City.
"It is incredible and irresponsible that the Conservative Councillors wanted to delete all of the Transport Policies in this City wide Sustainable Strategy and put nothing in its place.
"How can community representatives ever trust that this Conservative Administration means what it says about taking their views in to account when making policy. They simply are not listening."
All members of opposition parties voted against the removal of the transport section of the sustainable community strategy.
Lib Dem Group Leader Councillor Paul Elgood said:
"The Tories are abdicating responsibility for one of the key tasks for any local council.
"They have failed to support key transport improvements for the city and instead sat on their hands. Yet this should be their transport policy as it came from their own officers. They lack any authority on these matters now."
Elgood also accused the Tories of failing to support a range of environmental proposals, including cycling, public transport and road safety measures.
