Two bus routes that run through the City providing access from the outskirts of the City to destinations like City College, the Marina and the Open Market are under threat. The Conservatives in charge of Brighton and Hove City Council revealed their plans to cut nearly £100,000 from subsidised bus services in their proposed budget for the City.
Leader of the Labour Group Cllr Gill Mitchell said:
“Axing two vital bus services seriously undermines the Conservatives professed commitment to public transport in the City. The ending of the number 21 extension service is a particularly harsh blow as the route takes in so many useful destinations, such as London Road, Brighton Station and is a real disappointment for students trying to get to City College.
"They still have time to think again and we would urge them to seriously consider the effects this could have on the local economy, congestion and on the people that rely on these services.
"This cut was expected to be twice the amount, but after pressure from the opposition and the public it seems that the Conservative Leader Mary Mears has been forced in to another budget u-turn, but this was still not enough to save the no. 21 and 27 routes from the Tory cuts."
