LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Labour has condemned the leader of the Conservatives on Bristol City Council, Cllr Richard Eddy, for his attack on a local gay youth project.

Bristol based EACH (Educational Action Challenging Homophobia) is an award-winning charity for adults and young people affected by homophobia which supports young LGB people through various methods including training, mentoring and youth groups. The funding runs for five years.

Conservative leader, Cllr Eddy attacked the funding describing it in the Bristol Evening Post as “a mistaken and misguided, outrageous waste of money.”

He went on to say that the lottery had "long since ceased to impartially distribute lottery cash to worthwhile and respected causes, instead it seems obliged to dole out punters' money to a raft of politically correct lobbies."

Cllr Katie Hanson, co-chair of LGBT Labour said:
“Once again we see bigotry rear its ugly head in the Conservative Party. David Cameron gives us warm words of how his party has changed yet time and time again we see the reality behind the words.

“Tackling homophobia and homophobic bullying in schools and amongst young people is a vital campaign and it is right that charities doing that work are supported. Already this month we have seen Conservative MEP, Roger Helmer, dismiss homophobia and describe it as a ‘propaganda device’.

“Statements like this from Tory parliamentarians and councillors embolden those who seek to attack the LGBT community and undermine efforts to tackle homophobic bullying.”
