In Stonewall's annual Workplace Equality Index of the best employers, Sussex Police came 34th out of over 350 organisations that took part.

Employers are assessed on equality practices within the organisation, practical demonstration of good practice in recruitment and mentoring as well as how the organisation engages with LGB (lesbian, gay and bisexual) staff and customers. This year, feedback from over 7,000 anonymous employee surveys was also considered.

Sussex Police Diversity Champion, Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett, said:
"We've always prided ourselves on having a diverse workforce but there is always room for improvement. Last year I introduced an Internal Reference Group which allows all LGB staff to have a direct input into the culture and environment of Sussex Police as it affects them. A similar external reference group has also met to help ensure that Sussex Police meets the needs and expectations of the LGB public it serves. This year we will continue to learn from other organisations in the Stonewall Index to improve, even further, how we welcome and engage with our LGB staff.

"As a responsible employer and public service it is vital that every person, no matter what their background, feels we have treated them withfairness, dignity and respect."

Chair of Sussex Police Gay Police Association, Insp David Derrick, said:
"We are very pleased with the achievement. Climbing 58 places to position 34 is significant. The application is a reflection of Sussex
Police's commitment to LGB staff and a result of direct feedback given to Stonewall from LGB staff."

Deputy Chief Constable Giles York said:
"Harnessing talent from all communities makes us better at our job of serving Sussex. This good result directly reflects the importance I place on a workplace culture that allows motivated and capable people to flourish."

Last year Sussex Police came 92nd out of 317 organisations that took part.
