One of the Cyclepods

New cycle racks at Brighton and Hove Bus Company’s Lewes Road and Conway Street depots are hoped to encourage more employees to bike to work.
Brighton & Hove City Council’s travel plan partnership secured funding from the European CIVITAS scheme to improve on-site cycling storage for the bus company after a survey showed staff would cycle more if they had better storage facilities.
Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, cabinet member for environment, said:
“
We are providing more choice for the commuter by making it easier for staff in local companies to use different types of transport. The cycle storage is also environmentally friendly as it is made from recycled cans.”
Roger French, managing director of Brighton & Hove Buses, said:
“
We’re delighted with the help and encouragement the city council has given us to expand cycle storage facilities for our staff at our bus garages. I’m also looking forward to using my bike more in the coming months.”
The cycle storage in Lewes Road, called "
Cyclepods," has large overhead umbrella canopies to keep bikes dry in bad weather. Each "
Cyclepod" is manufactured from 12,500 aluminium cans.
Brighton and Hove Bus Company is also joining with the council and the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership by putting “
Beware of passing on the nearside” stickers on the back of buses to warn cyclists of the dangers of that.
Collisions in Brighton & Hove involving cyclists are relatively rare, but are showing signs of increasing. One of the danger areas for cyclists is passing buses and HGVs on the nearside. This might seem tempting in heavy traffic, but puts cyclists in dangerous blind spots for the drivers. Junctions and left turns are particularly hazardous for cyclists passing on the nearside.
Councillor Theobald added:
“
The message is ‘Share the Road – Share the responsibility for safety.’ It aims to help those cycling in the city by highlighting the importance of sharing road space safely.”
Posters are also being put up in Lewes Road and Eastern Road at the end of the month to remind drivers to check their mirrors when turning left or pulling in to look out for cycles. The poster campaign coincides with the changing of the clocks which marks British Summer Time as more people take up cycling during this period.
