Green councillors are urging residents to bring their own shopping bags into town today (Saturday 12) to mark National Plastic Bag Free Day.

Cllr Amy Kennedy is calling for Brighton & Hove to become a plastic bag-free city, following the example set by Modbury in  Devon, and Lewes closer to home.

Cllr Kennedy said:
"Although the Tories have reneged on their promise to eliminate free-issue plastic bags from the city, Greens and other local groups such as Plastic Bag Free Brighton continue to work to raise awareness amongst consumers on this issue.

"Notwithstanding the Tories' reluctance to take firm action on the environmental blight of plastic bags, the Council has produced an excellent guide which allows consumers to make informed choices about alternative carriers.

"Greens will continue to campaign at national level for a 10p levy on each free-issue plastic bag in the UK; a similar scheme in the Republic of Ireland has seen carrier giveaways fall by 90 per cent, with the monies raised going towards environmental projects.

"We need to see real action from the government on this, especially while locally the Tory administration refuses to tackle the problem of single-use plastic bags".
