Ann Norman, Mayor of Brighton & Hove will not only start The Sussex Beacon Half Marathon, taking place in Brighton and Hove on February 21, but will also be one of the runners.

This year The Sussex Beacon will be naming the opening mile of  this event "The Ovett Mile" named after the distance Steve Ovett made famous along with Sebastian Coe in the 1970’s and 80’s. Ann Norman, joined by her driver Robert, will be running The Ovett Mile after she officially starts the race at 9:45.

Michael Le Garst, Chairman of The Sussex Beacon, said:
We are absolutely delighted that Ann Norman has chosen to support us by running the "Ovett Mile”.  This is a splendid way to mark the 20th anniversary of this event and my last half marathon as chairman, as I will be standing down later this year.  I have watched The Sussex Beacon Half Marathon grow from humble beginnings to 2010 being the largest ever running of the event with 8,000 entries.”

All profits from The Sussex Beacon Half Marathon go to the Sussex Beacon - a unique centre based in Brighton providing innovative services to meet the changing needs of men and women living with HIV. The half marathon is the major fundraiser for the centre.
