Following reports that sex infections in Brighton and Hove are higher than anywhere else in the UK, outside London, Simon Kirby MP has renewed his calls for the Health Secretary to improve delivery of chlamydia screening for young people.

Mr Kirby tabled an EDM (Early Day Motion) in the House of Commons on this matter before Parliament broke for its Summer Recess. The EDM will remain
live in Parliament for the balance of the Parliamentary session, that is, in 2011.

Figures recently released show that nearly 500,000 new cases of STIs were diagnosed in the UK last year according to statistics released recently.

More STIs were reported for women, especially chlamydia. 88% of new chlamydia cases were reported in the  under-25 age group.

Mr Kirby said:
"My EDM, tabled a few weeks ago,  notes that 1 in 14 women in the 14-25 age group, who tests for chlamydia, is infected and if left untreated, it can lead to problems such as infertility.

"The statistics that have recently been released show the need for higher awareness, regular testing for the disease and a recognition of its long-term impacts."
