Local Lib Dem campaigners in Hove have challenged the Council over the future of the King Alfred Leisure Centre.

Concerned at the continuing uncertainty over the centre's future, and the prospect of it being potentially hived off under private management, the Liberal Democrats have said that they want the centre to be run by users and residents as a special community trust.

Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Steven Laing and Mark Collins said:
"The long running uncertainty over the King Alfred has seen the site remain underused, inward investment has only patched up the dilapidated buildings, and not created the sports facility local people deserve."

"Farming out the management of the centre to the private sector is not the only option. There is another way., a more democratic way - a community trust run by and for the community."

Liberal Democrats argue that a community trust could attract the investment to improve the site and create a well-used and modern sports centre. The community trust will be run by local residents and users so, they believe,  any improvements or changes would benefit the local community.

Lib Dem Councillor Paul Elgood said:
"Putting this out to the private sector would be a disaster, just like Saltdean Lido. The King Alfred must be run by the community, for the community. Similar community trust models have been hugely successful in other parts of the country."
