The Liberal Democrats will undertake a vote at its September party conference to adopt full gay marriage as party policy.

Brighton and Hove Lib Dem Councillor Paul Elgood said:
"The vote will see the party adopt the policy at its first party conference since going into government, keeping alive the party's radical tradition on equality issues.

"I am really glad that the Lib Dems are taking the lead on this issue and confirming our radical approach to equality issues.

"It will be truly historic if one of the government parties adopts this as its agreed policy platform. It really makes full gay marriage a possibility."

Councillor Paul Elgood has previously campaigned on partnership issues having proposed Brighton and Hove's original partnership register, the forerunner to civil partnerships. Government ministers used the high demand for this as evidence for the subsequent introduction of civil partnerships.
