Brighton and Hove Lib Dem Council Group Leader Councillor Paul Elgood has met with Starbucks to discuss a range of issues over the operation of the multinational.
Paul talked to them about their impact on local trading conditions, especially on areas such as St James's Street and Western Road, Hove.
Starbuck's Head of Corporate Social Responsibility requested the meeting at their controversial St James's Street coffee shop. Paul attended with Brighton and Hove Lib Dem Chairman, Lawrence Eke.
Paul said:
"I thought this was an ideal opportunity to raise a range of issues as to how this large corporation operates. It was a good discussion with strong views expressed on both sides.
"We discussed how they could increase the recycling of their packaging and make the shops more sustainable. I also raised issues around the workforce, especially the need to see more apprenticeships in the city.
"There was a robust exchange of views over the impact of the chain on local coffee shops. Brighton and Hove must retain its unique identity for a vibrant and independent traders.
"I was in two minds about whether to meet them and what could be achieved but I wanted to be sure that our views were heard loud and clear."
Paul has also been raising concerns over the new Sainsbury's on Western Road, Hove and the increasing corporate domination of previously independent trader dominated shopping areas.
