Lib Dem Group Leader Paul Elgood has condemned political interference to delay the report of the Independent Renumeration Panel which sought to reduce the number of posts held by Councillors eligible for payment.

Tory and Labour Councillors expressed concern during the Council's Governance Committee two weeks ago and last week's full council meeting, the Leader of the Council proposed a deferment of the issue until after the General Election.

Lib Dem Group Leader Paul Elgood said:
"This is the report of the independent panel and so Councillors should not seek to interfere with its recommendations.

"These Councillors are thinking more of their own pay than the need to keep these allowances to a minimum.

"At a time of scandal of over Parliamentary expenses, the Council must be fully transparent on these issues."

Paul Elgood is the only group leader not to receive an allowance. Both Paul Elgood and David Watkins have declined to take increases in their allowances during the recession.
