Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Pavilion, Berni Millam, has criticised the proposed Tory marriage tax rebate as evidence of "
no let-up in the long term Conservatives attack on single mothers".
Speaking to local party workers over the weekend, the single mother of three said that Tory policy of giving a tax allowance for people who are married, "
reflects the fact that despite all suggestions of change, this Conservative Party is no different from that of Margaret Thatcher and Peter Lilly who almost saw being a single parent as a crime to be penalised".
She continued:
"
There may be a logic for an allowance that supports children but this is not even that. It is to be given to married people whether they have children or not.
"There are 1.7 million British mothers and 200,000 fathers struggling to raise their children alone. Rather than penalise single parents, as the Tories would , the Liberal Democrats will ensure that people will not pay income tax on the first £10,000 earned. This would be a real and focused benefit to single parents trying to get back to the workforce".
