Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Simon Hughes MP will attend Brighton Pride this weekend.

Mr Hughes, who has represented Southwark and Bermonsey in Parliament since 1983, will join Lib Dem activists on the Pride and (no) Prejudice themed parade on Saturday morning. The Lib Dems are expecting around 30 activists to join them on the march.

Simon Hughes was recently elected Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats after Vince Cable took up the post of Business Secretary in the Coalition Government.  He has previously been party president, home affairs spokesman and shadow energy and climate change secretary.

Mr Hughes attended Brighton Pride in 2007 and is a regular supporter of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) events across the UK, including London Pride.

Brighton and Hove Lib Dem Councillor Paul Elgood said:
"We are delighted to welcome Simon back to Pride.

"He is a strong voice for equality issues in Parliament and has been an outstanding MP during his near three decades in Parliament.

"He now has a key role in the party as part of the coalition and we are excited that he is taking the time to support Brighton Pride.

"We are pleased to see Pride move forward positively in the last month. It is the city's premier event and I am glad that we can all unite for the big day.

"It is vital that Pride is successful for the city, and that everyone has an enjoyable and safe weekend."
