The Labour Government has unveiled a new plan for the future of higher education, setting out the important role universities will play in securing the country’s economic recovery and long term prosperity.
It calls for fairer access, more information about courses, likely future earnings, teaching quality and closer links with business.
Cllr Pat Hawkes, local Labour lead on education said;
"Both Sussex and Brighton Universities are in the ward I represent and many of the students that I speak with need more information about their courses. At the end of the day studying is a big commitment and will have a huge effect on the rest of their lives. So they deserve to know what exactly the courses will do for their job prospects and earnings.
"Students are not just school leavers. The UK has just fewer than six million workers with qualifications equivalent to A levels but with no experience of higher education. To get, at all ages, more people studying we need to make courses more tailored to people's needs. I want to see more part-time study, vocationally-based foundation degrees and work-based study.
"Business and industry contribute a lot to our higher education and their involvement is a big plus. They need to be involved even more so that courses are suitable for the world of work. As local councillors we will be working alongside local businesses in the City to ensure that students coming out of Brighton and Sussex University know what their next steps could be.”
