Labour's plans to fill local potholes

Simon Burgess, Labour's parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown and Celia Barlow, Labour MP for Hove, have welcomed the Government’s plans to give Brighton & Hove Council £151,500 to fill the city’s potholes.

The bad weather that hit Britain this winter inflicted substantial damage on the road network. Snow, ice and plummeting temperatures not only conspired to make this the severest winter in 30 years, they also combined to leave  many pitted and pot-holed roads to be repaired.

The allocation was announced in the Budget when the Chancellor gave an extra £100 million funding to local authorities to put right the damage.

Celia Barlow MP for Hove said:
This announcement is great news for Brighton & Hove drivers and cyclists. It comes on top of a trebling in national Labour investment for local road maintenance over the past decade – up from £265 million in 2000/01 to £809million in 2010/11. The substantial funding announced yesterday will allow local authorities to pay for the most urgent immediate repairs.

“It's a pity that the Tory run council didn't come up trumps during the snow and ice like the Government has now.  I complained at the time on behalf of dozens of residents because they were so slow in clearing roads, even in major shopping areas.”

Simon Burgess, Labour’s candidate for Brighton Kemptown said:
There are concerns about the quality of pothole repairs being made by Conservative-run Brighton & Hove City Council. So with this ring-fenced extra money there is no excuse for them to cut corners, they need to do the job properly which will be a great relief for all road users including cyclists.”
