Labour Candidate for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven Simon Burgess has taken the 10:10 pledge to cut his carbon emissions in 2010 by at least 10%.

Simon said:
"We have taken recycling, composting and cutting our car use and energy consumption seriously for years. Last year we had a solar hot water system and a new highly efficient boiler installed at home. We know there is always more we can do so we are keen to cut our electricity consumption further. We have now invested in a portable display that will tell us how much electricity we are using at any point. In addition we are trying switching to 'laundry balls' that do away with the need for washing liquid and all of us are keen to cycle about the city more.

"The introduction by the government of 'feed-in' tariffs for home generated power such as solar electric (PV) next year is very welcome - it's something that Des Turner MP and I have been campaigning hard for. I very much hope to invest in PV in the next few years but it’s a significant outlay so soon after installing solar hot water.

"I've just returned from holiday in France where it was good to see so many wind turbines. I initiated plans for them for the city council headquarters in Hove and for large ones at Shoreham Port but Conservative councillors voted down the council HQ ones and the Shoreham Port plans have fallen off the council agenda. Earlier in the summer Greenpeace found that Conservative councils have been voting down more than two-thirds of wind turbine plans whilst Labour councils have supported over half. That Labour record isn't good enough, but the Conservative record is shameful."
