In an Environment Scrutiny Committee meeting Cllr Melanie Davis, Labour councillor for Goldsmid asked that public transport in the City be made free to Under 16s.
Cllr Melanie Davis said:
“It is time to look at the rules around subsidies and travel concessions for our young people. We all know that Brighton and Hove suffer from congestion and serious parking issues, particularly during the ‘school run’ hours. The sooner young people start using public transport, the more it becomes part of their lives.
“Any encouragement for our young people to use the City’s excellent buses should be welcome. I’m calling for this Council to look to the highly successful free travel passes for children in London that were brought in under Ken Livingstone.”
