Labour Councillor Anne Meadows will be asking Cllr Geoffrey Theobald about parking on grass verges and cycle lanes at the next meeting of Brighton & Hove City Council.
Before 1996 Brighton and Hove’s highways were under the control of East Sussex County Council. Under East Sussex there was a by-law that made it illegal to park on grass verges. Cllr Anne Meadows who represents an area that suffers from the problem of cars parking on verges and in cycle lanes, is asking for this by-law to be reinforced and to include the issue of parking in cycle lanes.
Cllr Meadows added:
“
Parking on grass verges not only causes a muddy mess during winter months, but also causes problems for people wanting to cross roads safely.
"I would like to see any use of the old East Sussex by-law include parking restrictions enforced on cycle lanes. Many people, including children and students use the cycle lanes from the Universities and schools along Lewes Road, but the cycle lanes are often unusable because there are too many cars parked in them. This is an issue of both common sense and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.”
