The Brighton-based International HIV/AIDS Alliance have donated funds to support the Brighton AIDS Memorial.
Jane Waterman, Director of External Relations at the Alliance said;
“As a Brighton-based organisation working on HIV/AIDS around the world we felt that it was important to show our solidarity and support of this memorial for those who have died of AIDS in Brighton and Hove.”
“Our involvement is an important reminder that AIDS has not gone away. An estimated 2 million people around the world last year died from AIDS-related illnesses and 33 million people are living with HIV. We work alongside partners in 40 countries who face the daily reality of still losing their loved ones to AIDS because treatment is not available. This is our way of showing that activists around the world continue to commit to fight the spread of HIV.”
The memorial, a sculpture of two androgynous figures by local artist, Romany Mark Bruce, will be unveiled by David Furnish on Friday October 9 at 2.30pm, in New Steine Gardens.
James Leward of the memorial fundraising committee said;
“I would like to thank the Alliance for making a donation to the project. This, along with the community fundraising activity over the last few weeks, has ensured that we will have enough funds to have the sculpture installed in New Steine Gardens.”
Following the unveiling there will be a Three Choirs Celebration Concert called
You'll Never Walk Alone, at St Marys Church, Kemp Town at 7.30pm, followed by a Candlelight Vigil in New Steine Gardens at 8.45pm where people can have the NAME of someone they have lost to HIV/Aids read out.
