Next May residents in Brighton & Hove can vote for councillors. But before that the council is reviewing all polling stations to make sure the places where people vote are easy to use and get to for all voters, including those with disabilities.
From this week, residents can give their views on existing polling stations and tell the council about any problems that arose for them during previous elections. Electors can also suggest new or alternative polling places with reasons why these would improve access to voting in their area.
Polling places are reviewed every four years. There are currently 116 polling places in Brighton & Hove, including some unusual ones, for instance West Blatchington Windmill and the estate office at the Marina .
Now residents can tell the council how it can make their polling place better or easier to use. The council monitors facilities during elections, so has a good idea where voters have had difficulties, but is particularly keen to make sure people with disabilities are able to vote.
Following the experience of previous elections, the council has indicated the polling stations where changes could be made, from improving access, lighting and signage to finding alternatives to schools so as not to disrupt children’s education.
Closing date for comments is December 31. Following the review, a report will go before the Governance Committee in February for a decision on any changes.
