Greens in Brighton & Hove have written to the Department of Health demanding more funding for a fairer and more sustainable social care system.

The Green Group of Councillors made their call in response to the Government’s Green Paper on the future of social care - Shaping the Future of Care Together.

Cllr Keith Taylor, who co-ordinated the Group’s response, said:
“The way in which society cares for the old and the vulnerable is a vital part of building a civilised world. It is a fundamental element in the well-being of our community.

“Providing sustainable treatment and care for all those who need support must be a priority for the Government, and that means making sure there’s enough money in the pot to cope with growing demand.

“We’re really concerned the government hasn’t properly planned for the increase in the number of people needing support as our population continues to age, and so future funding of care is our number one worry. Greens believe that the state should provide a taxation-funded, non means-tested free universal health and social care service for all.

“We want to see a decent and dignified social care service for everyone - irrespective of their wealth. Haphazard and partial state support simply isn’t good enough.”
