The Tory administration of Brighton & Hove Council have announced that they would not be proceeding with the Old Shoreham Road cycle lane scheme proposals because of ward councillors’ concerns over safety.
Cllr Ian Davey, Green Group Transport Spokesperson said:
“This is clearly a political decision made for narrow political reasons – it has no basis in fact.
“This decision represents an irresponsible waste of public money; money targeted at helping boost cycling in the city.
“Not only have the Tories squandered £93k on the design and consultation on a scheme they never had any intention of implementing, they are also refusing to say what they have done with the rest of the £600k allocated to this scheme.
“Furthermore, Cllr Mary Mears’ request for an inquiry into a scheme that the Tories initiated and have subsequently grossly mismanaged is just a smokescreen to cover up their own incompetence.”
The Old Shoreham Road cycle lane proposals have now been postponed indefinitely.
