Green Cllr Ian Davey, who speaks for the Greens on Transport issues, has accused the Tory administration of undermining cycling in the city.
He was responding to news that the long planned Old Shoreham Road Cycle route is to be scrapped, and the money earmarked for it spent on other currently unknown projects.
Ian said:
“The Old Shoreham Road cycle route has been in the pipe line for years and was due to be completed in the next two months. The route was core to Brighton & Hove’s whole Cycling Town project - which has seen the city given in excess of £3 million pounds.
“The Tory administration has been backpedaling on this scheme for a while now - the council leader Cllr Mary Mears and her Cabinet Member for the Environment Cllr Geoffrey Theobald have persistently refused to answer my questions about the route, and its been many months since they consulted some 15 000 people, schools and businesses on the plans.
“Furthermore £600k was set aside to be spent on this core cycling scheme. They wouldn’t say how they plan to spend this cash, and there’s no guarantee it will go on sustainable transport measures.
“The right response to constructive criticism is to take it on board and amend your plans accordingly, not abandon them.
“Scrapping this scheme will disappoint thousands of residents, undermine cycling in the city more generally and send a clear message to residents about the Tory administrations priorities.”
