Green Cllrs are seeking Brighton & Hove City Council’s support for introducing a 20mph speed limit in residential streets across the city early on in the New Year.

At a Full Council meeting, Cllr Ian Davey will ask that the Cabinet conduct an investigation into the viability of introducing a default 20mph speed limit in order to save lives, cut emissions, and increase the city’s overall wellbeing.

Cllr Davey said:
“A staggering 141 people have been killed or seriously injured on our city’s roads in the last year alone and - perhaps most tragically - 13 of these were children.

“There’s no doubt Introducing a 20mph speed limit across residential roads in the city would cut this figure dramatically.

“Add to this the obvious boost such a measure would give to the city’s overall wellbeing – with safer roads meaning more people walk and cycle, and steadier traffic speeds leading to lower emissions as cars aren’t forced to stop and start all the time– and it’s an obvious choice.

“A string of towns around the country have now seen sense and adopted a 20mph speed limit - It’s high time Brighton & Hove, with our high road casualty figures, followed suit.

“The bottom line is that speed kills and the difference between 30mph and 20mph can be the difference between life and death for anyone involved in an accident.”
