Green Cllr Ben Duncan has criticised Brighton & Hove City Council for closing a public toilet with facilities for disabled people. Cllr Duncan made his comments after the Tory administration revealed it had no plans to re-open the loo on the corner of Upper Rock Gardens and Upper St James's Street.

Cllr Duncan said:
“For several months now the public toilet on the corner of Upper Rock Gardens and  Upper St James's Street has been boarded up.

“I raised this at last week's meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council, and was shocked to discover that the council has no plans to re-open the toilet.

“Instead, the Tories hope local pubs and cafes will throw open their toilets to the general public. Where that fails, they expect people to walk up the hill to Queen's Park or down to the seafront to the nearest public loos.

“For able bodied residents, this isn’t too much of a problem. But for older people, pregnant women, people with disabilities and those who just find it harder to get around, a local public loo is a must.

“I’m appalled the council seem quite happy to discriminate in this way – every resident of this city should feel able to go out and about as and when they choose. For many that means knowing an accessible, clean and open public loo is never too far away.

“Sadly, it seems the Tories aren’t bothered about making this city accessible for all.”
