Goldsmid Cllr, Alex Phillips has proposed a motion for the next full council meeting that would see the council sign up to the 10:10 campaign which aims to reduce 10% of carbon emissions by 2010.
Alex said:
“We all know we need to do more to tackle climate change - but it can seem like a daunting task, with distant, hard to reach goals.
“This is where the 10:10 campaign comes in: it’s a mass movement with one simple goal – a ten per cent reduction in UK carbon emissions by the year 2010.
“Currently, Brighton & Hove City Council is failing badly when it comes to lowering our carbon emissions. Signing up to 10:10 means committing to pulling out all the stops to change that.
"The council must look again at all services and see where savings can be made - be it through making offices more energy efficient, insulating more of our schools and council housing stock, or making sure local transport - including the council's own fleet of cars and rubbish collection trucks - are all energy efficient.
“Although in years to come we will need to reduce our emissions much more dramatically, focussing on the next 12 months is a good place to start.
“I hope that, as has happened nationally, we will get cross party support on this motion. That way we can send a clear message to local people, and the Government ahead of the crucial Copenhagen climate change talks: we are serious about lowering our emissions and tackling climate change – now, not tomorrow.”
