Green City Cllr Vicky Wakefield-Jarrett, alongside other residents of Brighton & Hove, is taking part in the Camp for Climate Action 2009 in London until September 2.

Vicky said:
“As an elected politician, I support trying to achieve change through the ballot box, but I also recognise the vital part played by direct action.

“Climate change is the biggest threat we face, and climate camp is a place for anyone who wants to see real action on tackling it.

“We urgently need to reduce our carbon emissions across the world but also closer to home. Here in Brighton & Hove, the Tory council has failed to reduce the city’s per capita emissions, while nationally the Labour government is continuing with the damaging policy of building new coal fired power stations.

“Nor has the Government ensured the  UK is an attractive prospect for alternative sources of energy - wind turbine company Vestas blamed the lack of demand for wind turbines in the  UK for closing their Isle of Wight factory earlier this month.

“Hopefully this camp will send a clear message to all in positions of influence: tackling climate change, and building a more just and sustainable world, has to be the number one priority.

“I hope the government will listen to the demands of the camp and take a strong position to tackle world emissions at the forthcoming climate talks at  Copenhagen.”
