A fire awareness day is to take place outside The Amsterdam Bar on Marine Parade on Saturday, August 28. The event takes place between 10am and 4pm.

Jim Killick, based at Roedean Community Fire Station, has organised the event specifically aimed at the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service team will be offering valuable fire safety advice and home visits, which could help to save lives. They will also be offering to fit free smoke alarms.

Jim says although everyone is welcome to attend the event they particularly want to target elderly members of the LGBT community and those living in houses of multiple occupancies:
“This is the first time that ESFRS has run this type of event and we feel that this needs to be addressed.

“A lot of people live in houses of multiple occupancy in old Victorian properties, which have been turned into flats. We want to make people aware of fire safety within the home and to offer to fit free smoke alarms.”

Jim has seen first hand the consequences of not having adequate fire safety within the home:
“I have attended fires in this type of property and want to ensure that we reach out to the occupiers and help them stay safe in their home and our community."
