Dog walkers who fail to clean up after their pets are falling foul of the city’s animal welfare team.
The officers have been patrolling local hot spots for dog fouling and issuing warnings and £80 on the spot fines to offenders. They have also been reminding owners that walking dogs without a lead is an offence, punishable with an £80 fine.
Areas currently patrolled by animal welfare officers and local Police Community Support Officers include the seafront and Max Miller walk. Over the next two months, the team will be focussing on Queens Park Road, Knowle Estate, Hangleton Park, Westbourne Villas Hove area, Elm Grove, Brunswick and Palmeira Square area.
Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, Cabinet Member for Environment, said:
“
Allowing your dog to foul a public place is unpleasant, anti social, but also against the law.
“There are plenty of dog bins available, particularly in popular dog walking areas, and they are well used by the maj or ity of dog owners. But unf or tunately there are still some who are letting the side down.
“This council is committed to creating a safe, pleasant and healthy environment for our residents and visitors, and those who spoil our city will end up facing a fine.”
Bill Randall, Green Councill or for Hanover and Elm Grove, said:
"
I am pleased the council is taking action to get the city, literally, out of this mess. Complaints about this problem, which is a nuisance and a health hazard, have risen dramatically over the past six months. Irresponsible dog owners must be called to account and, where necessary, prosecuted."
