Journalist, Alice Klein has moved from a high profile job at the Daily Telegraph to join Brighton-based charity the International HIV/AIDS Alliance.
Alice worked on the Telegraph’s arts desk and has interviewed celebrities such as George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Renee Zellweger, Michael Sheen and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle, but she is now hoping to transfer her skills to help train up citizen journalists in some of the poorest countries in the world.
Alice has written about society, development and environment for organisations such as the Guardian, Independent, Press Association and Ecologist but says that her heart has always been with the marginalised in society.
Alice said:
“I’m keen to support people in developing countries who don’t get a chance to tell their stories. The programme I’m working on supports more than 250 writers based in 50 countries around the world to write about the health and development issues their communities are facing, issues like HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria.
“I hope to support these citizen journalists to develop their reporting skills and work with them to produce new media and audio visual material including video and photography.
“When I first graduated from University I considered humanitarian work so spent a summer volunteering in El Salvador, one of the poorest and most violent countries in Latin America . The people I met there said I could help them more by returning to my own country to publicise their stories and affect the Western policies that were negatively impacting their lives.
“After completing a Masters in development I worked in mainstream media which was fantastic but often ignores those in the developing world who really need the exposure, so I am delighted to have found such an innovative project and look forward to taking it forward with the Alliance here in Brighton.
“This programme is all about empowering marginalised people to have a voice and share their truth. It’s an exciting challenge and one I’m looking forward to pursuing.”
