Brighton & Hove City Council has voted to sign up to the 10:10 campaign, after a Notice of Motion presented by Green Cllr Alex Phillips received unanimous, cross-party support. The campaign's aim is to get carbon emissions reduced by 10% by 2010.
In her maiden speech at Full Council, the newly elected Goldsmid Cllr proposed the council join the campaign.
Speaking after the meeting Alex said:
“I’m delighted the Tories have had a change of heart and agreed to sign up to this important campaign.
“Currently, the council is failing badly when it comes to lowering our carbon emissions – but doing more can seem like an uphill battle, with distant, hard-to-reach goals.
“Signing up to the 10:10 campaign means breaking down the task we face into much more manageable chunks. While I’m disappointed the Tories and Labour weren’t prepared to go further, and sign up for annual cuts in our emissions, joining this campaign is a great first step."
Cllr Gill Mitchell, Leader of the Labour Group, said:
"Labour Councillors are pleased to fully back the 10:10 programme. However, it is not enough to simply pay lip service to an idea and we will be challenging the Conservative Council to actually deliver the actions required to meet this pledge.
"Currently there is little sign of them making any real progress to reduce carbon emissions in the city."
