Brunswick and Adelaide Lib Dem Councillor Paul Elgood has pursued the City Council on its failure to meet legal targets to ensure the diversity of its senior management is fairly balanced.
Paul said:
"An answer to a written question at Thursday's (27th January 2011) full council meeting offers limited insight into how Brighton & Hove City Council plans to improve the diversity of its senior workforce.
"The Council failed to publish its monitoring data in time for Councillors to scrutinise its performance. The subsequent late publication revealed that the Council missed its own target. Publication of the data is a legal requirement, as is the requirement of a balanced workforce."
A reply to his written question shows that the council "
has no strategy in place to make improvements and are reliant on outside consultants".
Paul added:
"I specifically asked what strategy they have in place to improve the diversity of their senior workforce. The reply suggests a total reliance on outside recruitment consultants to meet this key duty.
"The Council says it is making progress, but it is still missing its target. How long do they need to make this figure? I've been asking this for years now.
"They need to take responsibility for this - and not rely on outside recrutiment consultants.
"There is no strategy and no leadership to see progress on this and they suggest that due to the freeze on jobs, progress could be even harder."
