Brighton & Hove aims to host the biggest ever mass walk in the city to date and has issued a call for people to sign up.
The seafront is expected to turn yellow with the first 400 walkers being offered free T-shirts - donated by ITV – as part of Walk4Life National Walking Day on September 26.
ITV are covering the event as their featured walk for the region and are providing Walk4Life t-shirts for the first 400 walkers, free water and goody bags.
The two mile walk, which starts on Hove Lawns at 11am and finishes on Madeira Drive, will include a visit to the city’s iconic seafront bandstand to hear music to tie in with National Bandstand Day.
The event will see a walking "
market" with gazebos, tables and Walk4Life and Walking for Life outdoor banners/display boards and information tables which together make up a ‘one-stop’ walking information point.
The market will provide further information on countryside walks, Healthwalks, Nordic walking with comprehensive information on walking from Journey On to get around the city. The council’s
www.journeyon.co.uk website works out the number of steps and calories burnt for every journey.
The event, which is run nationally by Walk England on behalf of the Department for Health, is being organised by the Healthwalks scheme within Brighton & Hove City Council’s sports development team and part funded by NHS Brighton and Hove .
Councillor David Smith, Cabinet Member for Recreation, said:
“
This is going to be a great event that will not only raise awareness of the health benefits of walking, but also profile all the fantastic work that we are doing in the city around walking and physical activity.
“We also run Healthwalks which are healthy, sociable and great fun. There are 15 short walks every week designed to help people get the most out of walking for their physical and mental health. More than 1,000 local people walk with the scheme each year.”
Participants for Walk4Life National Walking Day, who can sign up on the day, are strongly advised to sign up beforehand to save time. Contact
